A18-branded chips will be included in each of the four iPhone 16 variants, claims Jeff Pu, an analyst who focuses on suppliers to Apple.
This week, Pu stated in a research note with financial services company Haitong International Securities that “we consider A17 Pro as a transition design and now expect all the iPhone 16 models to feature A18, on TSMC’s N3E.”
Pu clarified his expectations in response to our email, as shown below:
A18 chip in the iPhone 16 (N3E)
A18 chip in the iPhone 16 Plus (N3E)
A18 Pro chip for the iPhone 16 Pro (N3E)
A18 Pro chip in the iPhone 16 Pro Max (N3E)
A switch to the A18 chip for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus would be notable given that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are outfitted with the A16 Bionic chip.
In comparison to TSMC’s first-generation 3nm process, N3B, which is used for the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro models, N3E is a designation for the company’s second-generation 3nm chip fabrication process. N3E is less expensive and has a higher yield.
Given that the iPhone 16 series won’t be available for around a year, Pu is probably speculating here with the marketing names; whether Apple adopts the A18 and A18 Pro branding remains to be seen. It’s still feasible that Apple will continue to use the A17 and A18 Pro branding for their iPhone 16 processors.
The news that Apple has scrapped its plans for solid-state buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro versions was originally revealed by Pu. He also correctly predicted that the iPhone 15 Pro models would have an additional 8GB of RAM and a higher starting price for the iPhone 15 Pro Max than the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

According to a recent claim by DigiTimes, Apple may be getting ready to introduce a seventh-generation iPad mini before the end of the year.
